Wart Removal Myths and Misbeliefs

Wart is a common skin disorder caused by a virus called Human papillomavirus. They appear as small projections all over the body. Today, medical science have well developed to explain the pathophysiology of warts and to cure all kind of wart disorders using advanced treatment methods. However, some of us have wrong beliefs and assumptions regarding wart formation and its treatment.

Interestingly many of us believe that the projections in the body occur due to the action of creatures like toads, reptiles, spiders, insects etc. Like the same, there are many misconceptions regarding the treatment of warts. People all around the world do a lot of unscientific processes and procedures to get rid of warts. Some of these procedures are very dangerous and makes the condition worse. Some of the major fallacies regarding the wart removal are:

Wart removal using horsehair

We all know that Human papillomavirus cause warts, and the warts will not disappear until we destroy these viruses. Many people all around the globe believes that a thread tied in the base of the wart can cure the disease. For this procedure, people use different materials like threads, horse hair, women’s hair etc to tie the warts. In fact, a wart is nothing but the unusual growth of skin itself and appears as small projections and it consist of nerves and blood vessels same as the other body parts.

Tying the base of a wart using thread or hair will block the blood vessels of the wart that supplies nutrients and oxygen to the tissues. Finally, after few days, the tissues die naturally. However, this miracle does not happen always. The effectiveness of this procedure is very slow and the wart does not cure completely. The base of the wart may still have thousands of Viruses. The presence of a single virus can produce another wart in the same spot.

Dissection/removal of the wart

Dissecting the wart is the worse method of treatment that bears heavy pain and delivers zero result. The removal of wart may be successful if we dissect the wart in its first stage of growth. At the first stage, the wart growth is limited to the superficial skin layers, so cutting the wart from the base may be successful. In later stage, when a wart increases in size, it spreads into the deeper layers of skin and dissection of the wart at this phase is of no use. Cutting big warts may enhance spreading of wart viruses to adjacent tissues. In case of blood vessel damage, huge blood loss and abscess may occur with heavy pain.

Burning the wart

Many people believe that burning wart is the best way to get rid of the disease. They think that the viruses die while burning the wart tissues. However, this is not true, as this procedure cannot guarantee 100% virus destruction. Just one virus left in the spot is enough to produce more warts. Human papillomavirus die only in extreme temperatures. In LASER therapy, medical practitioner burns the warts using high temperature developed with the help of strong beam of lights at sterilized settings. Burning the wart in home environment with unsterile traditional methods may damage the surrounding tissues and the protective layer of skin named stratum corneum, which acts as the first layer of defense against pathogens. The pathogens are able to invade our body through the burned skin walls and may cause severe infections.

Today, a number of effective wart removal methods are available in medical sciences, which prevents the recurrence of warts by destructing the virus completely.

My Best Lavender Herb Care Tips

Lavender herb is one of my personal favorites – that aroma just can’t be duplicated and always conjures up images of vast purple fields swaying in a gentle breeze – I could just roll around in its splendor! My herb garden is never without a handful of lavender shrubs, they are the perfect addition to my garden as a whole – tainting it with it’s sweet scent and giving that ever so slight sense of wilderness and mysticism. I love to sleep with a pouch of it’s dried leaves under my pillow at night to send me off into a peaceful sleep. My lavender plants take good care of me when I feel slightly under the weather and the least I can do is to give some TLC back.

I want to share with you some of my best tips to growing lavender and taking care of this marvelous herb so that it can flourish in your gardens as well as my own. This article will tell you all you need to know about taking care of lavender so that you can benefit from its medicinal, culinary and decorative offerings.

How to Give Lavender the Best Start.

Purchase seeds from any nursery or garden center. This herb loves to bask in the sun and needs around eight hours of sunlight a day so take this into consideration when finding the perfect spot to start seeding.

Get digging around the bed to loosen up soil and remove any obstructions such as pesky weeds, rocks or other debris. Lavender has a rather large root system and needs plenty of room, expect to dig six inches deep to allow the root to spread.

You can increase the soil’s fertility by adding some compost manure into the bed where your seeds will be planted.

Give your lavender a better chance by growing it first in a pot, at least for a couple of weeks before transferring it to your prepared bed. Remember that the soil should be loose as opposed to compact.

When moving to the designated beds, ensure there is plenty of space between seedlings to allow for air to circulate and individual roots to grow. Cover the roots with loose soil.

To help water and heat retention, layer a little sand over the soil and plants. You will need to water lavender frequently in the first year for optimal growth and condition.

Caring for Your Lavender

Water your plants regularly and allow them to feed by providing plenty of compost manure. If you notice that the plant is yellowing mix some liquid sea kelp with fish emulsion and dilute with water before utilizing.

If your plants are turning brown at the base then this is a sign to decrease the amount of watering.

Trim the leaves down around a third during spring to allow re-growth and an eventual fuller bush.

Regularly cut down on spent stems, this will prevent a woody and malformed growth. Dead ends will split the plant.

After LASIK Eye Surgery Series Part I of III – Bathing and Showering

Once a LASIK eye surgery patient’s procedure is complete, their LASIK eye surgeon office sends them home with an accompanying driver to take a long nap. When they awake, they will already be able to experience clearer vision. However, it is imperative to remember that corneal tissue requires several weeks to completely heal. While this occurs, patients often have questions about when and how they complete certain everyday tasks after their LASIK eye surgery. This article is one of an upcoming three part series that discusses when post-op LASIK individuals can bathe and shower, how to approach required medications and how to complete daily activities until your eyes have completely healed.

In regards to bathing, numerous LASIK eye surgeons deem it acceptable to take a shower or birdbath the day after your LASIK surgery as long as you are extremely cautious and do not get hair care products and facial washing liquids too close to the eye. However, many LASIK eye surgeons recommend waiting for 5 days before water (or soap, shampoo, body wash, etc.) is allowed in the eye or your head is submerged in water. These precautions allow your corneal tissue to heal properly. If water, soap, shampoo and/or similar washing materials are not kept out of the eye for the 5-day post-op period, patients could:

  • Run the risk of infection with soap, water, shampoo, etc in eyes
  • Experience burning and irritation
  • Rub their eyes and wrinkle the corneal flap made during the LASIK procedure, risking corneal flap dislodgement
  • Accidentally exacerbate any dry eye symptoms/begin experiencing dry eye symptoms

In regards to swimming, LASIK eye surgeons’ offices heavily advise post-op LASIK eye surgery patients to wait for 14 days before jumping in the pool, hot tub, ocean or lake. Due to the chemicals in chlorinated water and the particles found in salt and fresh water bodies, irritation, redness and corneal tissue infection is a high possibility immediately after LASIK. Interactions with these bodies of water can slow the healing process or cause post-op damage.

Besides swimming, bathing and showering, post LASIK eye surgery patients are also prompted to closely monitor other aspects of everyday life for certain, short periods of time. Keeping a close watch on your progress while remaining safe and cautious is paramount for allowing your eyes to take time to fully adjust to the procedural changes. Medications, both required and optional, makeup practices and the proximity of pets and young children should also be monitored accordingly.

Top Five Benefits of a Hot Towel Shave

There’s a reason the best barbershops in town offer hot towel shave services for their male clients. Not only is it a relaxing experience that results in smooth skin, but it also has multiple health benefits. Below are the five advantages to utilizing this service once per week.

It Opens Up Your Pores

Barbers have special cabinets that keep towels heated to the desired temperature. When these items are placed on a man’s face prior to a trim, the heat begins to open the pores after only a couple of minutes. The hairs also start to soften, which is prime time to get out the razor and begin the shaving.

It Provides a Closer Shave

Once the hairs are soft, and the pores are open, the shaving can begin. It is best to always move the razor in the direction of the grain. It will become noticeable right away that one is able to obtain a closer shave with this method than simply slathering on a handful of cream and scraping away. Afterward, take a look in the mirror and notice how much healthier the skin looks. It will also feel extremely smooth to the touch.

It Exfoliates

In addition to clipping your whiskers, the hot towel shave also doubles as an exfoliating treatment. This is because the blades remove up to four layers of dead skin cells with each swipe. Making this process a weekly event is ideal as it allows the healthy skin cells to breathe. Skin will appear more radiant and attractive to everyone that walks by.

It Removes In-Grown Hairs

Another plus associated with this type of weekly grooming is the removal of ingrown hairs. While using your straight razor, also sometimes referred to as a cutthroat razor, you’ll notice a few blood spots appear. These are actually caused by the roots of ingrown hairs being pulled out. There’s no need to fret, though, as once the routine is complete, the blood spots and any bumps that made an appearance during the trim will quickly dissipate.

It Creates a Resistance to Razor Burn

You may experience mild irritation, known in the scientific community as Pseudofolliculitis barbae, the first time you try a hot towel shave. This won’t always be the case. The skin on a man’s face will begin to develop a resistance to the itching, burning, and bumps that often show up after the first few treatments.

If anyone wishes to try this at home but does not own a special heating cabinet, a vegetable steamer works well. Always remember to remove the hot towels with a pair of tongs once heated and then wave them around for a few seconds to make them a tolerable temperature that won’t cause a burn to the skin. Of course, they do sell steamers that were created for this purpose online. This is a great option for anyone who plans on continuing this procedure for years to come.

Age Spot Erasing Made Easy And Right From Your Own Kitchen

If you’re anything like most baby boomers, after graying hair, poor eyesight, weight gain and winkles, age spots rank fifth on your list of aging nuisances. But you can find comfort in erasing those age advertisers right from your own kitchen.

What Causes Age Spots

To protect your skin against excessive sun exposure, your skin makes cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes create the dark brown pigment called melanin. The melanin makes your skin look darker or suntanned.

But sometimes, your typical day in the sun causes an uneven jump in melanocytes. This awkward production creates irregular coloring or pigmentation of the skin.

The resulting solar lentigines, or what most people call liver spots or age spots, can appear brown, black or gray. Age spots pop up on the areas of the skin most readily exposed to the sun, like the chest, back, face and hands.

Even youngsters can get age spots with too much unprotected sun exposure.

How to Avoid Age Spots Completely

Preventing age spots proves the best way to completely avoid them. This includes:

1. Avoiding intense sunlight hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. Wearing a hat and long sleeve shirt in the sun.

3. Applying sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapplying it every two hours.

Additionally, note that the sun and excess chemicals don’t mix. For instance,

most often in middle-aged women, might mistake irregular areas of reddish-brown pigmentation called poikiloderma for age spots.

Poikiloderma results from chronic sun exposure combined with sun-sensitive chemicals in cosmetics or perfume. Hence, poikiloderma most frequently appears on the side of the neck or on the cheeks.

Sunscreen Is More Potent Than You Thought

You may feel annoyed with the repeated advise of slathering yourself with sunscreen, but a study published in the October 14, 1993 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine gives you reason to appreciate your sunscreen an effective age spot eraser.

In the study, researchers found that among sunscreen users, those who rubbed on the most cream with the greatest regularity had the largest reduction in actinic keratoses.

Actinic keratoses (AKs) describe the rough, red, scaly patches, crusts or sores that measure anywhere from one-quarter to one-inch in diameter. Like most other age spots, you’ll find actinic keratoses on body areas most readily exposed to the sun.

How To Minimize the Appearance of Age Spots

Eat your age spots away

Research studies also reveal the benefits of eating your nutrients to reduce the appearance of age spots. The water-soluble pigment found in most vegetables, fruits, grain, flowers, seeds, leaves and bark, called flavanoid provides numerous antioxidant properties.

In research studies, flavanoids even prevented cancer formation in animals.

Likewise, you’ll find age spot reducing properties in soy products. The protein extracts of soybean and soymilk contain several different estrogen-like substances called isoflavones. One study showed that soy isoflavones might lighten age spots.

Home Remedies

Erasing your age spots can begin right in your own kitchen. In Japan, the rice based drink, sake, serves as an age spot lightener when applied to the skin.

You can also use lemon juice to lighten age spots. Simply dab a cotton ball in freshly squeezed lemon juice and apply the liquid to the age spots twice daily- once in the morning and once in the evening. Warning: Lemon juice makes the skin photosensitive so ensure to protect your skin with sunscreen before enjoying the sunshine.

Pull a green papaya out of the fridge and use the fleshy side of the skin to reduce age spots. Just apply the papaya to the spots for 15-20 minutes daily and repeat until you attain the desire lightness.

Of course, since home remedies offer an inexpensive and gentle way to reduce age spots, they require time to see results- usually six to eight weeks.

What To Do Right Now To Stop Age Spots

Because age spots, poikiloderma and actinic keratoses can serve as warning signs for skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends scheduling a professional skin examination each year.

You can find out how to give yourself a skin examination by visiting []. Use this information now before your forget, because before you know it, the sixth aging nuisance for baby boomers- memory loss-will creep in on you.

Nature’s Bounty For Treating Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a hormonal disorder. The condition occurs when the thyroid gland located in the neck area, secretes thyroxin below the normal secretion level. It is extremely important to cure the disorder as soon as possible because it is thyroxin that controls the secretion of other hormones in the body. It also helps in proper functioning of the metabolism of the body. In fact, this hormonal disorder is linked with other physical disorders like obesity and hair loss.

To prevent the adverse effects of hypothyroidism, it is necessary to first get the problem diagnosed properly. For this the first thing that is required is to recognize all the symptoms that characterize hypothyroidism. Some of these symptoms are

Rapid increase in body weight

Hair loss

Intolerance towards cold

Heavy periods in women especially right before menopause

Pain in joints and muscles

Dry and very rough pale skin

Hearing problems

Decrease in mental abilities

Lack of proper sleep

Low fertility

Less of sweating

Distorted speech

Constant numbness in arm and leg muscles

These symptoms may seem to be related to other individual problems. That is why it is extremely difficult to diagnose the disorder on time.

However, once the nature of the disorder is understood properly, it is not a problem to treat the disorder and restore proper functioning of the thyroid gland. The main treatment that is provided nowadays is through the intake of synthesized hormones in the form of pills or injection. But now, yet another way of treating hypothyroidism has been discovered. It is the absolutely natural and complete herbal. There are various herbs that are being used in the medical world to create the best herbal medicines for the treatment of hypothyroidism. Some of these herbs are –

Lobelia – though not much has been researched about this herbal plant, it is being used for various health treatments. It usually helps the body in getting rid of all toxins.

Bladder wrack – also known as Fucus vesiculosus. It is an excellent stimulant and a good source of iodine. The herb is usually taken in the form of capsules or simply as tea.

Irish Moss – the herb is used for boosting the immune system of the body while it is trying to recover from some serious illness.

Cayenne – the herbs causes the body to sweat and cleanse itself of all kinds of toxins that lead to inflammation

Coleus – this is one of the most useful herbs. It helps in restoring the proper functioning of the thyroid gland so that thyroxin can be easily excreted at the normal level.

St. John’s Wort – the herb is extremely useful in the treatment of depression which will further help in boosting the immune system of the body

Kelp – this is one of the most important sources of iodine which is much needed for the treatment of goiter.

These are just a few herbs that can be used for treatment of hypothyroidism. A word of caution – make sure that you consult an expert herbalist before trying any of these medicinal herbs.

Color Contact Lenses – Change Your Eye Color in the Blink of an Eye

Did you ever wish that you had a different eye color? Or maybe you just want to do something a bit crazy and have different color eyes for each party? Color contacts can do wonders for your appearance, but only if you select the right type and color. Learn how to get the best out of your color lenses, what your options are and what to consider when selecting color contacts.

Do color lenses really change your eye color and look natural?

This is a question that worries most people who want to try color contacts for the first time. After all, you want people to think “what gorgeous eyes she has” not “what nice contact lenses she wears”.

Color lens manufacturers are aware of the issue and try to make color contacts look vivid, yet natural. There is a lot of sophisticated technology involved in the brand name color contacts like Acuvue 2 Colors or Freshlook. The lens isn’t just solid color, it has a pattern similar to the pattern of a human eye. Also the color isn’t consistent throughout the lens, just like in most people eyes. See color contact lens comparison

Color lens choices for light eyes

Depending on the effect you want to create, people with light eyes can wear enhancement or opaque color contacts.

If you just want to enhance your natural color, half transparent, enhancement lenses would be great for you. The best choices are:

  • Acuvue 2 Colors Enhancers – to brighten your eyes.
  • Freshlook Radiance – lenses with an illuminating effect that enhances your color and makes your eyes appear sparkly.
  • Freshlook Dimensions – unique lens design makes your eyes appear not only brighter but also creates the impression of depth and dimension.
  • If you feel adventurous and want a dramatic change, go for opaque lenses:

  • Acuvue 2 Colors opaques
  • Freshlook Colorblends
  • If it is your first time with color contact lenses and you aren’t sure what effect you want, start with enhancement lenses. This way your friends will notice that you look more appealing, but they probably won’t notice what it is about you that attracts their attention.

Color contact lenses for dark eyes

If you have very dark eyes and tried color contact lenses a few years ago, you probably were not very impressed with the effect. Contacts of the previous generation didn’t look quite right. However, recently developed color lenses like Freshlook Colorblends can do wonders for dark eyes.

One thing to remember, however, is that enhancers don’t work on brown eyes, so your only choice is opaque contact lenses. Acuvue 2 Colors opaques and Freshlook Colorblends work best for dark eyes.

Also you should be careful, when selecting the color. It should be a color that would look right with your skin and hair. See color contact lens chart with suggestions and photos.

If you just want to make your eyes seem brighter and more vivid, without changing their color, go for brown or hazel color lenses. This way your eyes won’t look a different color, but people will notice that they are bright and lively.

Opaque color contacts work very well. The only thing they can’t do for you is to make your eyes light. Blue, green and aqua opaque contacts create a deep, vivid color, which suits people who have naturally brown eyes.

Do color contacts come with corrective powers?

Acuvue 2 Colors and all Freshlook collections come with visual correction powers as well as in plano (no correction). Additionally, Freshlook Colorblends is the only color lens that comes in toric, so it is suitable for people with astigmatism.

So which is better: Acuvue 2 Colors or Freshlook?

There is no single answer to this question. Both brands of lens are very comfortable to wear and create a great look. The only difference is in the colors. On the same person, blue from Acuvue would look very different from Freshlook blue. It really depends on your eyes and face, and it’s almost impossible to predict the result until you wear your color contacts.

Don’t pay to much attention to how the lens looks in the picture, because on you it will probably look different. This happens mostly with enhancer lenses – blue enhancers over blue eyes look very different from enhancers over gray eyes. Opaque color contact lenses also can look very different on different people; this is not due to your natural eye color, but because of eye shape, skin and hair types.

When you narrow your choice to one color, I would recommend asking your doctor for two prescriptions: one for Acuvue 2 Colors and another for Freshlook. Then order both. They cost pretty much the same, so you would spend no more than if you were to order 2 boxes of each.

Then, after wearing your new color contacts for a while, you can decide for yourself, which looks better.

Also, doctors usually give you free trial color contacts. You can’t really wear them in public because trial lenses have the word “test” imprinted on them, but it gives you a fair idea about the color. Ask for two free pairs, one from Freshlook and one from Acuvue, and see which looks best.

As far as the price is concerned, Freshlook and Acuvue 2 Colors cost about the same for a 6-lens box. However, all Freshlook lenses are monthly disposable, while Acuvue 2 Colors is a 2-week disposable contacts lens. So it turns out that Freshlook is twice cheaper.

If you were thinking of giving yourself a little treat, getting color contacts would not disappoint you. And now when you know what would work best for you, you can make your choice with confidence.

    Happy changing!

    Ringworm? It Makes Me Itch!

Contrary to the beliefs of other people, ringworm is not caused by worms. It is an infection caused by different types of fungi, depending on the infected body part. Generally, fungi that cause the ringworm itch tend to be found on moist areas of the skin. This is because fungi live in warm and moist environments.

The classic signs of ringworm are rashes or lesions accompanied by scaling. The infected area is also itchy. The rashes have red edges, which are usually elevated. Sometimes, the edges form a crusty surface. The center of the rash looks like a normal skin which can be sometimes scaly or shiny. With these characteristics, the rashes look like a ring on your skin. Thus, forms the name ringworm.

The ringworm infection can spread all over your body.

It can make your head itch. Ringworm of the scalp or tinea capitis infects the head area. It can spread out up to the back of your neck that causes swelling of your surrounding lymph nodes. Tinea capitis can be seen as patches on the head. This is really itchy, and it causes hair loss of the affected area. If left untreated, permanent scarring of the scalp can happen -permanent hair loss on the area too. This is commonly seen in children. In addition, ringworm can also infect your face (tinea faciei) and beard (tinea barbae).

It can make your body itch. Ringworm of the body or tinea corporis is characterized by the classic signs of ringworm. It is usually seen on the areas of abdomen, chest, shoulder, and back. This type of ringworm can rapidly increase in size if left untreated. In addition, your jock itch is also a type of ringworm. Its medical name is tinea cruris. It grows on the area of the groin which can spread up to the thighs. The color of the rashes in this area is reddish-brownish. It is scaly and shiny. You can have intense itch because the groin area is warm and moist.

It can make your hands and feet itch. Ringworm of hands (tinea manuum) and feet (tinea pedis) manifests the same characteristics. The infection is located on the areas between fingers and toes. These are scaly and itchy rashes. Sometimes, the infection can spread on the soles and make them thicker. Ringworm of feet is commonly known as Athlete’s foot. Additionally, your nails can be infected too. It presents a different set of symptoms that include yellowing and thickening of the nails. The infection can be itchy too. It is called tinea unguium.

The treatment for milder form of ringworm is usually anti-fungal cream. Some common medications that are used topically for ringworm are ketoconazole, miconazole, and cotrimazole. For more severe ringworm infection, oral antibiotics and antifungal medications are required. Selenium sulfide is also used for tinea capitis. Another medication used to relieve ringworm itch is tolnaftate. This cools down the ringworm and also prevents it from spreading.

These hassles can be avoided if you take measures to prevent contacting ringworm. As much as possible, avoid places that are hot. This may cause you to sweat more which make your body the perfect habitat of fungi. You also have to temporarily stay away from people infected with ringworm. But the most important prevention you can do is to have a good personal hygiene. Taking a bath everyday can wash off all the fungi and bacteria on your skin. Handwashing will also prevent you from getting ringworm. These measures, even though they are simple, will surely take you away from ringworm.
