Anxiety Breakthrough

One of the very useful things I discovered was the “relaxation response” which began the road to my recovery from anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia,

Dr. Herbert Benson, M.D., coined the term “relaxation response.”

Dr. Benson was speaking about the physiological changes that happen within the body when it is relaxed during meditation.

Particularly, he observed during this period of relaxation that physiological changes such as levels of chemicals in the blood – which serve as indictors for stress – decreased, oxygen consumption decreased, breathing rates decreased, heartbeat decreased, and skin resistance increased – increased skin resistance is a good thing because it indicates a person is sweating less and, in all likelihood, more relaxed.

Dr. Benson surmised: “The relaxation response is a physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional responses to stress… and the opposite of the fight or flight response.”

You’ll likely recall from an earlier installment that I discussed the fight or flight response as the response that occurs during a panic attack.

Well Dr. Benson’s findings mean that the “relaxation response” induces just the opposite effect of the fight or flight response.

I would like to provide you with some simple steps you can follow today to induce your own relaxation through a process known as self-hypnosis.

Here is the process:

-Sit down in a comfortable position and close your eyes.

-Imagine the muscles of your feet relaxing all the way up your body to the top of your head

-Focus your attention on your breathing.

-Breathe in deeply and then let your breath out.

Do this for ten or twenty minutes.

The above exercise is helpful and I would recommend doing it on a regular basis in order to experience a consequential and consistent effect.

Obviously relaxation is very important for anyone who suffers from anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia. It is, in my opinion, part of an overall holistic approach to panic attacks.

I really believe that you can reap the benefits experienced during the “relaxation response” through the above form of self-hypnosis and I think that hypnosis is easier when starting out with a relaxation practice than meditation.
